A satirical spoof, Ibid presents itself as an academic biography of a fictional Roman philosopher whose name happens to be “Ibid.” Lovecraft pokes fun at scholarly excess and the overuse of footnotes with clever absurdity. Though far from his usual horror fare, it shows his playful side and his wit. It’s a rare piece of literary humor in the Lovecraft canon. Short, quirky, and unexpectedly charming.
