A man recounts how he was haunted throughout his life by a mysterious double who shared his name and appearance. This other William Wilson continually interfered whenever he strayed morally, driving him to madness. In a final confrontation, the narrator kills his double—only to realize he has destroyed a part of himself. The story explores themes of duality, conscience, and self-destruction. It’s one of Poe’s most psychological and symbolic works.
