Yertle, king of a small pond, wants to expand his kingdom, so he forces the other turtles to stack beneath him for a better view. As the tower grows, one small turtle at the bottom, Mack, finally protests—and topples the stack with a burp. Yertle falls, and the turtles are free. The story critiques arrogance and tyranny through Seuss’s signature wit and rhythm.
